Large Art Burns (LABs) are any of the art burns occurring at the event that require a perimeter, this includes The Effigy, The Temple and any other Large piece of art burned during the event. All are considered to be different effigies.

For our usage, effigy most often refers to a representation or image, especially sculptured or built, as in a monument or figure, that is then burned. Our effigies help to remind us that the celebration that is alchemy is as impermanent as the art we are creating and burning.

The Effigy and The Temple have special meanings and significance to the burn and when they are lit. The Effigy is burned at the peak of celebration for the event and The Temple is burned as the symbolic end of the event. Other LABs are burned to bring the community together at different times through the burn.

Each individual effigy (LAB) team lead is responsible for the design, construction, transportation, burning, clean up, and any other needs of their effigy build.

Our effigies have very few constraints on their artistic and structural concept. However, these large builds involve safety, logistical, and person-power concerns. The art department will work closely with Safety, Operations, and LAB team leads to help them realize their vision for an effigy if it is selected. This includes coordinating with individuals who are willing to devote their time and expertise to help LAB teams be successful.

JOIN US!

Are you a builder, carpenter, metal worker, or CNC machinist looking to share your skills with the LAB teams and the burn community?

Are you none of those things but want to get your hands dirty and learn new skills, working on an effigy?

Have you been around the block, pitched in on some builds, and liked what you saw?

Do you just love power tools, the smell of sawdust, and sweat?

There are all kinds of ways that you can help make this effigy a reality. We want you for LAB teams!

 LAB Team Lead Responsibilities

  • Manage and gather your LAB team

  • Developing a budget for the team

  • Preparing a post event report (+Delta)

  • Creating the design concept for an effigy (does not have to include the technical design)

  • Overseeing and curating the artistic aspects of an effigy (Keep in mind, things can and may have to change while building!)

  • Thinking of ways to include community members in the construction of an effigy. Also, we highly encourage fostering an inclusive build environment outside of power tools for your effigy.

  • Working with the Safety team to come up with a cool and safe ignition/burn down plan

  • If you have and idea, but are not sure on execution or planning reach out the the Art Department at Art@Alchemyburn.com

Build Weekend

  • Prepare and be available for the weekends leading up to burn. If pre-build time is available you will be needed to attend and lead the volunteers for your effigy.

  • LAB team leads need to be able to communicate their needs for these builds and coordinate with other departments.

  • Building effigies requires a significant time investment prior to the event, and oftentimes going into the event.

  • LAB team leads should expect to be on site for assembly and construction in the week(s) prior to the event depending on your builds needs.

  • If natural lumber is used, the LAB team leads should expect to attend a harvest weekend earlier in the year to source your materials.

  • LAB team leads may not start with power tool expertise, but they are expected to have a willingness to learn how and participate using them.

  • LAB Team Leads should submit with an understanding that the process of building a LAB is labor intensive. In the spirit of inclusiveness, we understand that not all humans have the same physical capabilities. The Art Department will not build an effigy for you, but we will help accommodate LAB team leads to overcome obstacles that might prevent them from being able to build an effigy.
